Once again, it’s that time of year … time to sit back and reflect on all that I am thankful for.

I continue to rediscover my love for the bicycle, even though my lungs continue to rebel … and I’m looking forward to my “training camp” in Arizona.

I still have a good job, which I still generally find satisfying, even with the ups and downs inherent in any work situation.

Another Utah Cyclocross Series is almost in the books; only 2 races left this year, and even though it can be tough to give up my weekend days to work, it’s always good to see people enjoying themselves and knowing that I help make it possible.

Another season on the slopes at Solitude begins shortly. Perhaps even this weekend if we get another decent storm on high as anticipated.

And yet again, last but certainly not least, I have many good friends, both old and new, who all seem to genuinely care in one way or another.

Thank you Mom & Ralph, Ben & Doris, Geraly & D.J., Art, Richard (atmo), Matt & Melissa, the crew at Revolution, Rachel, Scottie, Burke & Tiff & the town of Beaver for allowing me to be a part of the Crusher in the Tushar, Kirsty, Jennie & Joel, Darrell, Theresa, Marit, Gigi (whose constant smiles remind me that life is to be enjoyed), Steve & Amy, Ali, Brian, Tyler & Nick & the Jamis team for their hospitality during the Tour of Utah, Chris, Dave, Sarah K. (whose constant smiles on the bike have made me a fan), Sarah N. (who needs to write more often), Critter Bug (with whom more movies need to be seen) and pretty much everyone else with whom I’ve spent quality time over the past months and years.

HOME

I didn’t know I was grateful
for such late-autumn
bent-up cornfields

yellow in the after-harvest
sun before the
cold plow turns it all over

into never.
I didn’t know
I would enter this music

that translates the world
back into dirt fields
that have always called to me

as if I were a thing
come from the dirt,
like a tuber,

or like a needful boy. End
Lonely days, I believe. End the exiled
and unraveling strangeness.

 — Bruce Weigl (b. 1949)

The FinishLynx camera we use at the finish can detect time differences down to about 1/2000th of a second. That’s 0.0005 seconds; and yet in this photo finish, to the pixel (even at highest resolution), this race was too close to call as anything other than a dead heat; a tie for first place.

I don’t think it gets any more amazing.

Another ‘cross season come and almost gone … tomorrow is the last race of the 2010 Utah Cyclocross Series (or at least, the last race in which participants can gather points towards the series title).

Monday is the last day of what is technically still autumn … with the winter solstice (and thus, the first true day of winter) happening on Tuesday.

And I seem to be the master of stating the obvious … but I haven’t posted anything original here in weeks, and just felt like I needed to write something about things ending and new things starting, but I’m really drawing a blank.

So what’s next?

Continuing to ponder the mysteries of my life … skiing as often as I can, riding my bike when the weather is good, and come spring, learning how to fly-fish. What more can anyone do?

It’s a good thing the Utah Cyclocross Series isn’t sanctioned, or we’d be fucked too … nothing like taking an obscure rule that no one knows about and which has never been enforced and then stating that not only is it going to be enforced next season, but oh, because you didn’t get approval in 2009, you can’t have your series in 2011.

From cyclingdirt.org:

Word came in early this evening that the VERGE New England Cyclocross Championship Series and the North American Cyclocross Trophy Series (NACT) would be “banned” for the 2011 season. Other series around North America similarly face an uncertain future based on a little known rule put in place by the UCI and USA Cycling. NECCS director and all around cyclocross wizard Adam Myerson sheds some light on the situation.

And from cyclingnews.com:

Code 1.2.026 retroactively enforced for 2010-2011 season

The North American Cyclo-cross Trophy Series (NACT) and the Verge New England Championships Cyclo-cross Series (NECCS) are facing suspension for not following an obscure and previously unenforced International Cycling Union (UCI) rule.

Adam Myerson, the NECCS promoter and former member of the UCI Cross Commission, and Brook Watts, the promoter of Cross Vegas and race director for the NACT series this year, were caught by surprise by the ruling. The rule (1.2.026) requires each series to apply for UCI inscription, but was housed in the general rules of cycling and not in the cyclo-cross specific document, and to their knowledge has never before been enforced.

“Kelli Lusk of USA Cycling informed us yesterday as soon as she got the notice from Peter Van den Abeele [the UCI's Cyclo-cross Technical Director -ed.] by email,” Myerson said. “I was given one sentence that said these series were banned. They said they would make an exception and allow the individual races to continue but the series were banned.”

With the compromise, the ten races in the NECCS series, those in Green Mountain, New Gloucester, Northampton, Sterling and Warwick as well as the NACT races in Washington, Gloucester and Boulder can continue, but it leaves the USGP as the sole remaining national series consisting of UCI races.

Ogden Golf Course for allowing the Utah Cyclocross Series to promote the State Championships in such a beautiful and challenging location, and to the Ogden Standard-Examiner for a great write-up of the event.

Maybe he was also Peewee Herman, sans suit, but with tie), and a circa-1990 acid-washed-jeans-muscle-car douchebag (Jason Sager) and anyone else that cared to show up.

Video again provided by Sam Ray.

The winner of the elite race? The smallest boobed Hooters girl I’ve ever seen … with the funkiest tanlines.

Every once in awhile, Bart Gillespie (Revolution-Peak Fasteners) has a bit of bad luck … and when he does, you can count on Jason Sager (Jamis Factory Team) to capitalize on it … in this case, from what I understand, Bart had a low tire on his A bike, and some mechanical issues on his B bike after a bike change. Sager got a gap on chaser Kevin Hulick (Biker’s Edge) while Bart dealt with his mechanical issues before rejoining Hulick in the chase. On the last lap, Bart put in an attack, gapped Hulick and finished with a strong 2nd place.

From seeing how strong both Sager and Bart were this past Saturday, I don’t think that Bart win #4 would have been guaranteed had Bart not had any mechanicals. I’m looking forward to the next go-round between the two riders … and Kevin Hulick is definitely looking like a contender, and might actually be a spoiler at some point this season. Definitely a rider to watch.
