Stupor Bowl Sunday … (redux)

» by flahute in: Life on February 4th, 2008 at 03:07:43 UTC |

Oh well … Giants win.

Once again, the best part of the Super Bowl was the ads.

This one was my favorite:

But I’m guessing that either the Budweiser “Rocky” ad, or the Bridgestone “Squirrel” ad will win the various popularity contests.

Stupor Bowl Sunday …

» by flahute in: Cycling, Life on February 3rd, 2008 at 17:23:04 UTC |

I know some people will disagree with me, but I really hope the New England Patriots win the Stupor Bowl tonight … if only to take the “only perfect season” record out of the Dolphins’ hands …

But I also really hope the Patriots have a terrible year next year … truly wretched, as in simply falling apart as a team; and that another team (preferably the Minnesota Vikings) have a perfect or near-perfect year, just to deflect some attention away from the Patriots … because the last thing we need is another team gloating over their perfect record for the next 30-odd years.

And I still can’t believe that I am older than the Super Bowl, because it seems to me like it’s always been around …

Major League Baseball’s World Series (in its modern form) between the National League and American League started in 1903 (the same year as the inaugural Tour de France). The Stanley Cup has been considered the championship trophy of professional hockey since 1915, before officially becoming the championship in 1947. But the Super Bowl now playing it’s 42nd edition; the first Super Bowl was played in January 1967, after the 1966 season, and only about 3 months before my first birthday.

Donal Óg

It is late last night the dog was speaking of you;
the snipe was speaking of you in her deep marsh.
It is you are the lonely bird through the woods;
and that you may be without a mate until you find me.

You promised me, and you said a lie to me,
that you would be before me where the sheep are flocked;
I gave a whistle and three hundred cries to you,
and I found nothing there but a bleating lamb.

You promised me a thing that was hard for you,
a ship of gold under a silver mast;
twelve towns with a market in all of them,
and a fine white court by the side of the sea.

You promised me a thing that is not possible,
that you would give me gloves of the skin of a fish;
that you would give me shoes of the skin of a bird;
and a suit of the dearest silk in Ireland.

When I go by myself to the Well of Loneliness,
I sit down and I go through my trouble;
when I see the world and do not see my boy,
he that has an amber shade in his hair.

It was on that Sunday I gave my love to you;
the Sunday that is last before Easter Sunday.
And myself on my knees reading the Passion;
and my two eyes giving love to you for ever.

My mother said to me not to be talking with you today,
or tomorrow, or on the Sunday;
it was a bad time she took for telling me that;
it was shutting the door after the house was robbed.

My heart is as black as the blackness of the sloe,
or as the black coal that is on the smith’s forge;
or as the sole of a shoe left in white halls;
it was you that put that darkness over my life.

You have taken the east from me; you have taken the west from me;
you have taken what is before me and what is behind me;
you have taken the moon, you have taken the sun from me;
and my fear is great that you have taken God from me!

  — Isabella Augusta, Lady Gregory (1859 - 1932), Irish dramatist.

What’s better?

» by flahute in: Music, Utah on October 19th, 2007 at 04:15:10 UTC |

I just realized that I’m going to be racing (and getting my ass kicked by) Kathy Sherwin, Dayna Deuter, and the Mistress.

I guess that’s better than getting beat by the Hover and Layer clans, all of whom are fine kids … but they’re KIDS!

Fort Buenaventura, Ogden, Utah on Saturday. Maybe. Wheeler Farm, Murray, Utah on Sunday. Definitely.

And now the smack is being thown down by mountain girl; who has been sick half this week, even AFTER I gave her a personal back-up DVD of large chunks of my jazz collection to store (but definitely not share or copy). Luckily for me, she’s racing in the women’s “B” race, so I don’t get to have my ass handed to me by an invalid.

Hope she digs the music. I heartily recommend Lavay Smith’s One Hour Mama and/or Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Miss Thing and Johnny Boyd’s Last Word In.

I have yet to decide which Chet Baker version of My Funny Valentine I like best.

Rainy Sunday …

» by flahute in: Photography, Utah on September 24th, 2007 at 18:06:30 UTC |

Went out for a short ride yesterday afternoon, trying to beat the storm but didn’t quite make it out early enough … got sidetracked by my downstairs neighbor, who is apparently experiencing a little dripping from my apartment …

I’ve been delaying calling a plumber to fix the leaky/drippy faucet in my tub, but it looks like I also have a small leak from the pipe feeding water to the toilet’s tank as well. I tightened the valve up and it looks like I stopped the drip, but the pipe and shut-off valve are old, and could likely stand to be replaced.

I finally got out, and headed south through Holladay towards Cottom Bottom, then climbed up past the Old Mill to Wasatch to head back north. Was going to take Wasatch all the way up to Parley’s but it started raining; and more heavily than just a sprinkle … as I was heading north, I got held up by a Sheriff’s deputy blocking traffic so that a Lifeflight helicopter could airlift out an injured hiker on Mt. Olympus.

When it became obvious that the heli wouldn’t be lifting off anytime soon, and as I was standing there getting wetter and wetter, the deputy finally allowed me to scoot through; I cut the ride short, and dropped back down 4500 South to head home, rather than going all the way up to Parley’s.

Did stop and take a few pix over the valley on the way.

Lazy Day weekend …

» by flahute in: Movies on September 3rd, 2007 at 02:03:30 UTC |

… because who actually works on Labor Day?

I guess to some extent I will be; today (Sunday) has been my only real day off this weekend … much of yesterday (Saturday) was spent packing and cleaning and purging; and tomorrow will be more of the same … although I guess I’ll try to squeeze in a ride, which I have sucessfully managed to avoid thus far this weekend.

Have watched a couple of good movies, though … Hot Fuzz and Zodiac

Julie 2, Cars 1

» by flahute in: Cycling on June 25th, 2007 at 18:13:40 UTC |

A couple weeks ago, the Mistress posted this screed.

Today, the cars came close to evening up the score … haven’t got all the details yet, but it appears that Julie got smacked this morning and broke her hand.

Hope she kicked the shit out of the car while waiting to go to the hospital.

Update 20:53 GMT (1:53 PM MDT) — Nothing broken. See Julie’s blog for more info.
