2011 Ride #28 (Sheffield Loop)

After standing, sitting, and driving for much of the past 3 days, it actually felt really good to get out on the bike today and turn over my legs a few times. Managed to keep the heart rate down, too … avgHR was 144 bpm, and maxHR was only 163 bpm. For [...]

One of the good things about the Tour de France ending today? I won’t be sitting at home watching the race in the mornings, and then going out for my rides during the hottest part of the day. I knew it was going to be a bad one when my heart rate [...]

Oh my hell … I don’t think I’ve ever felt that bad on the bike without actually barfing or shitting my chamois … heart rate was through the roof from the get-go, and couldn’t breathe hardly at all. Honestly, I’m surprised that I managed to make it all the way to the [...]

… but didn’t find it today. Lungs and heart rate were even less cooperative today than they were yesterday; throw in a charlie horse in my left hamstring, and strong winds blowing out of the south, and this ride was a challenge from the get-go. Just gotta keep telling myself that any [...]

Another day, another short suffer-fest. Although, actually, I didn’t really suffer quite as much today as yesterday … my max HR today was one point less than my average heart rate yesterday; and today’s average HR was 17 points below yesterday’s. I think that might actually be a good thing.

First time on the bike in just over a month … and I suffered like the fat pig that I am, at least while turning the pedals. The downhills were a joy … it’s kind of nice being able to hit 40mph on a descent without having to work.

Rode with Bart [...]

I kind of felt like the space shuttle Challenger today … I pretty much exploded immediately after launch. AvgHR 168bpm, MaxHR 184bpm … on the flats, while doing a whopping 15 mph. The absolute lowest my heart rate got was 143bpm …

The bright side is that I finished the loop, [...]

With apologies to Gene Autry:

Back in the saddle again Spinning my legs like a fiend, Where the fixed-gear riders roll, On the goddamned chip seal roads. Oh, I’m back in the saddle again.

Whoopi-ty-aye-oh! Rockin’ to and fro, Back in the saddle again. [...]

Felt much better than yesterday, at least legs and lungs. Heart rate was still through the roof when I wasn’t pushing myself, though. I did take three weeks off the bike for the Tour of Utah, and family visits, and was just plain lazy, [...]

Must have gotten the timing of my asthma inhaler blasts right today … legs felt good; lungs felt good … only had to stop a couple of times to get my heart rate back down, but wasn’t gasping for breath during those brief respites, [...]
