Brilliance

Undecided?Having a migraine is something I would never wish upon any other person … but when you get them as often as I do, you know that often the only thing that can be done is to write-off the day, pop a couple Maxalt or Relpax, crawl into bed and sleep.

After taking off from work early, that’s exactly what I did, and a good thing too, since as previously mentioned I had tickets to see David Sedaris tonight at Abravavel Hall. Got home about 11:00 am, slept until about 5:00 pm and was good to go.

I was joined at the show by Marit, Matt, and yoga instructor Scott. Sedaris was brilliantly funny, as expected.

One of the pieces he read tonight, about undecided voters, is in the current issue of the New Yorker. Go read it. Now imagine it being read aloud by bitchy middle-aged gay man.

Try not to laugh.

At last …

» by flahute in: Life, Word Play on October 20th, 2008 at 13:01:24 UTC |

I’ve written in the past about how much I love David Sedaris’s essays on This American Life; and I remember a wonderful one-man show of The Santaland Diaries put on by one of the local theater companies a few years ago.

But tonight … tonight I get to see the man himself, giving a reading (presumably) from his most recent book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames. I’ve been looking forward to this show since KUER did their spring pledge drive. I couldn’t afford to pledge then, because I was still in the midst of a $300 pledge from the previous fall drive; so when the tickets went on sale to the public, I pounced.

Two pair, front row balcony, have been stuck to my refrigerator for the past 5 months and some-odd days … awaiting their opportunity to put butts in seats for an evening full of laughs.

I can’t wait for the workday to be over.

Me Talk Pretty One Day

» by flahute in: Word Play on May 10th, 2008 at 02:03:12 UTC |

I love public radio, and especially This American Life … and one of the best things about the show is when David Sedaris has a segment.

A few years ago, Kim and I went to see a local production of The Santaland Diaries at the Rose Wagner Center; and there have been countless essays on the radio which had us rolling on the floor; almost literally in my case, when I really start laughing.

When KUER had their spring pledge drive one of the gifts up for offer, in return for a sizeable donation, was tickets to see David Sedaris at Abravanel Hall. Since I am already in the midst of a sizeable pledge from this past fall’s pledge drive, I opted out of a pledge in the spring drive … instead opting to wait until tickets went on sale … today.

I programmed my phone to give me an alert at 9:55; giving me 5 minutes to get to ArtTix to get tickets when the went on sale at 10:00 …

The prime seats in the Orchestra section were gone … only seats left were towards the back, on the sides … but I did get front row balcony seats.

I can’t wait … only 5 months and 11 days until the show!

Now, to find a date.
