AAARGH!!! I was really hoping for a good result from Vande Velde at the Giro this year; even more so for a good result at the Tour; but this has got to put a serious crimp in his training schedule to get ready for July.

VALDOBBIADENE, Italy (AP)—American rider Christian Vande Velde has fallen during the third stage of the Giro d’Italia and withdrew from the race.

He was taken to a hospital Monday, and his Garmin-Slipstream team said the extent of his injuries were not immediately clear.

Vande Velde and teammate David Zabriskie tumbled at the 87-mile mark. Zabriskie got back on his bike and rejoined the pack but Vande Velde stayed on the ground.

Vande Velde finished fifth in last year’s Tour de France. At last year’s Giro he wore the overall leader’s pink jersey after Garmin won the opening team time trial.

On the bright side, Team Garmin-Slipstream’s Tyler Farrar did get second in the stage; and the Astana boys are looking strong. Tomorrow’s summit finish will tell the tale, though …
