Once again, the divine lindy-hoppus bunnyus; she of idiosyncratic memes, has tagged me for literary check-it-out-ed-ness.

1. Hardcover or paperback, and why?

Hardcover, whenever possible, otherwise trade paperbacks … can’t stand mass-market books, because they just feel flimsy … and to my thinking, flimsy books aren’t meant to last, and thus the words inside are less important.

2. If I were to own a book shop I would call it…

Bound Words

3. My favorite quote from a book (mention the title) is…

This one varies from day to day … but right now, it’s a line from a Li Po poem, found in The Enlightened Heart (as edited by Stephen Mitchell):

“We sit together, the mountain and me, until only the mountain remains.”

4. The author (alive or deceased) I would love to have lunch with would be…

Theodore S. Geisel, for the good doctor had a way of speaking to both children and adults alike in his books.

5. If I was going to a deserted island and could only bring one book, except for the SAS survival guide, it would be…

Right now, I’m thinking the Dhammapada … but my mood changes daily, and I’m not sure I could limit myself to one translation.

6. I would love someone to invent a bookish gadget that…

I’ve always wanted to be able stop time so that I could read without having to worry about the need to put a book down.

7. The smell of an old book reminds me of…

Tiny little used bookstores in Santa Cruz and San Francisco … I used to be able to spend hours wandering the 3 aisles, browsing through nearly every single book on the shelves to find that perfect book to take home.

8. If I could be the lead character in a book (mention the title), it would be…

Philip Marlowe, in Raymond Chandler’s books; or perhaps Dashiell Hammett’s The Continental Op.

9. The most overestimated book of all time is…

Pretty much anything by John Grisham or Dan Brown.

10. I hate it when a book…

… either leaves me flat when I’ve finished it … or worse, is unable to grab me enough so that I actually can finish it.

Now then, fearless readers … but most especially CZT, the Doctor, the Mistress, the Wise Man, and the Condor … TAG, YOU’RE IT.
