Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot, I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

Many people will recognize the above little ditty as a reference to Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. Many more will recognize it from the “V for Vendetta” movie and/or graphic novel.

What I wonder is how many people will equate the society depicted in the book and movie with what is currently happening in the United States under George W. Bush’s administration.

One of my colleagues showed me a new slogan he has posted to his cubicle wall:

What’s frightening is just how true the above is, when warrentless wiretaps; seizure of library records; assaults on academic freedom and scientific inquiry, and so on.

Maybe it’s time for everyone to stand up and start questioning our government.
