Now THIS is ‘Cross!

Cyclocross is a niche sport within a niche sport. Most people don’t get it, and that’s understandable … riding what amounts to a road bike (albeit with fatter tires) off-road in the rain, snow, and mud just doesn’t appeal to the fair-weather rider.

But sometimes, seeing what it’s really about can change some minds.

So, [...]

Quote of the Day

“It is very easy to forgive others their mistakes. It takes more grit and gumption to forgive them for having witnessed your own.”   — Jessamyn West (1902-1984), American Author

Snow!

Well, it didn’t arrive (in the valleys at least) for yesterday’s ‘cross races, but the resorts have gotten another couple feet of snow. Brighton now has a base of 38-inches, compared to just 20-inches before the storm began to roll through. We are still supposed to get more snow today, then a couple days off, [...]

Damned rain isn’t turning to snow!

40-degrees this morning. FORTY! How are we supposed to get snow when it’s FORTY????

Okay for cyclocross, but bad for skiing (although, I’ll bet it is actually snowing up at the resorts, since they’re about 4000 feet higher than I am right now).

Quote of the Day

“Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control, these three alone lead life to sovereign power.”   — Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809-1883), English Poet Laureate

Cyclocross Weather is coming to Utah

According to the National Weather Service, cyclocross weather (rain/snow) is finally coming to Utah; just in time for the second-last race of the season. Rain/snow is supposed to start on Friday night, and turn into snow on Saturday … hopefully early enough that we’ve got snow before the race, as well as actually getting snow [...]

Ski Season is Here!

After a long, hot summer, ski season has finally arrived in Utah. Brighton opened on Thursday, 11/17, and I just got an email alert from Solitude Mountain Resort that they are opening two lifts on Monday, 11/21.

The anticipation has been killing me. I went skiing for the first time in 20 years this past [...]

Cyclo-Cross Training & Techniqueby Simon Burney

A bit out-of-date, as the last edition was published in 1996, but this is still the Bible for the beginning cyclocrosser. Covers technique and tactics, as well as training and then-current technology. There is still no better primer on cyclocross.

Rider Down: Update

Bicycle Retailer reported yesterday that Clay Mankin’s death has been determined to have been of natural causes.

According to City Cycle store manager, Craig Kelliher, “Clay’s departure was an entirely organic event. He departed before he and the bike came to a stop. In other words, he never touched the ground. I cannot imagine any [...]

More and Better Quotes of the Day

From City Cycle’s memorial to Clay Mankin:

“One final paragraph of advice: Do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am — a reluctant enthusiast… a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is [...]
